Most people are fairly divided on science: either you love it, or you hate it. If you belong to the latter camp, it is probably because science classes may seem too technical and boring. However, that is a great misperception. If you know what to do, scientific experiments can be fun—even magical! With the right scientific equipment and know-how, you can take up a number of interesting projects. In the chemistry lab, you can make gooey slime, invisible ink, and glittering crystals! Here are 7 simple and fun experiments to try out at the chemistry lab!

1. Layered Drink

You must have seen beautiful drinks with distinctly separate layers and colors. Gravity-defying and magical as these drinks may look, they are actually based on simple scientific manipulation. This type of drink is based on the principles of density: the denser a liquid, the more it will sink. Effectively, you can layer one type of drink on another. All you need is:

  • two-four different drinks with different volumes of sugar.
  • Sample filtration droppers
  • A narrow glass

This is what you need to do:

  • Check the back of the juice boxes for the quantities of sugar per part. The most sugar-concentrated a drink is, the denser it is.
  • Once you have determined which drink is the densest, carefully pour out a layer of it into the glass.
  • With the dropper, slowly begin adding the second drink with the sample filtration dropper. This will ensure that the liquid only gets added slowly. You will see it has accumulated on the first layer.
  • Repeat this with the third layer.
  • Voila! You can now taste this magical drink you made, thanks to a little bit of science!

2. Gooey Slime

Nothing is as fun as slipping some gooey slime into the hands of an unsuspecting person, except making slime at the chemistry! You can actually make this cold, malleable semi-liquid that every seventh-grader seems to own, right in the chemistry lab! In fact, it is very easy and fun to make. Here is what you need:

  • Borax Powder
  • Water
  • PVA Glue
  • Food coloring
  • Glitter
  • One Erlenmeyer Flasks
  • One flat plastic plate

This is what you need to do:

  • In the Erlenmeyer Flask, mix around three teaspoons of borax with 80 ml water. Stir this quickly. Then you can cork the flask and shake it around, right until the borax dissolves.
  • In the plastic plate, mix two teaspoons of PVA glue with four teaspoons of water. You can mix this using a brush for additional ease. Add the food color gel you like.
  • Carefully pour two-three teaspoons of the borax and water mixture. You can also add some glitter now.
  • Keep mixing. Before long, this will transform into the gooey slime that slithers in your palm! You can play around with the ratios of each element for stickiness and fluidity.

3. Green Fire

Have you ever seen a magician whip out a red, purple or green fire, and wondered how they made it happen? The answer lies in some basic chemistry! Thanks to a few chemicals found in the chemistry lab, you can make your very own colored fire! Here is what you need to make green colored fire:

  • Copper sulfate in the liquid form
  • Sawdust chunks
  • Glue

Here is what you need to do:

  • Pour the copper sulfate into a bucket. Keep adding the sawdust chunks.
  • Add some glue so that the chunks begin sticking together. Keep stirring this so that the sawdust is completely coated.
  • Take out the chunks and dry it overnight
  • Set it on fire! You will see bright green flames! For other colors, you can mix different chemicals. For electric blue flames, you can use liquid copper chloride. For purple, use potassium chloride.

4. Hot Ice Crystals

Even though hot ice may seem like something like a bit of a paradox—such magic exists! What is more, you can actually make it in the comfort of your own home! Using hot ice, you can make ice castles, polar bears and even candyfloss models: all of which give off heat! This is in fact, the easiest experiment to try out. All you need is the Hot Ice Crystals Science Kit. This comes with the sodium acetate solution that you need to pour and mix to form your ice crystals. The molds in the box, which include a castle and bears, can be used to make your very own winter wonderland! This simple game can be a source of immense wonder for the people around you and a sure winner at science fairs!

5. Invisible Ink

What is the one sure shot way of communicating secrets to your best friend? Invisible ink! This is no Harry Potter fantasy—you can easily whip up some invisible ink in the chemistry lab! Here is all you need:

  • Baking Soda
  • Paper
  • Water
  • Iron
  • Paintbrush

Here is what you need to do:

  • Mix the baking soda and water together to make a solution.
  • Using a paintbrush dipped in this transparent solution, write your message on the paper.
  • Now pass it on to your friend. All they have to do is to lightly iron the message, or hold it up against the heat of a light bulb, The heat will cause the solution to darken, revealing your message! This is perfect for your next mystery adventure!

6. Shining Those Earrings

You may have old silver earrings that have aged and darkened. Typically, this means that you would have to discard those earrings or put them away. However, with a little chemistry trick, you can restore the shine of your favorite pair of earrings! Here is what you need:

  • Dull earrings
  • Clear glass bowl
  • ½ cup plain vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • Paper towels

Here is what you need to do:

  • Mix the vinegar and salt together in the clear plastic bowl.
  • Soak the earrings into the concentrate for a few minutes. Leave it untouched.
  • After 5-15 minutes, take out the earrings and use the paper towel to wipe the surface. The mixture of vinegar and salt has reacted with the accumulated oxidized particle to remove it. So, the blackened part will scrape away to reveal the bright surface underneath!

7. Blowing Balloons Without Wasting Any Breath

If you have a party to plan for, sitting and blowing individual balloons may seem like a task. Instead of blowing the machines, you can construct a simple contraption with the aid of a little biology and chemistry, which will inflate the balloons on their own! Here is what you need:

  • Half a cup of activated yeast
  • Empty plastic bottle with a narrow neck
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • Balloon
  • Warm water
  • Funnel

Here is what you need to do:

  • Mix the yeast, some lukewarm water, and sugar. Filter it into the bottle with the funnel.
  • Quickly cover the mouth of the bottle with a balloon.
  • Place the bottle into a wide-mouth cup, filled with lukewarm water.
  • Sit back, and watch as the balloon inflates on its own. This is because the yeast mixture produces carbon dioxide, which begins filling up the balloon! Not only will planting a few bottles like this save you the huffing and puffing of a birthday party, but it would also make for a cool trick to show your friends!
