Process of Respiration in Plants and Animals

Respiration in Plants and Animals We will talk today about the process of respiration in plants and animals covering all the different aspects of the process.  DEFINITION Respiration may be defined as the oxidation of organic substances, with the release of energy within the cell.   RESPIRATORY SUBSTRATE Generally, all protoplasmic substances, which release energy after oxidation are termed respiratory substances, but precisely respiratory substrate are those, which on oxidation break down to carbon dioxide and water.  The chief respiratory substrate is glucose.   SITE OF OCCURRENCE The external respiration occurs in the different respiratory organs of the animals for the gaseous exchange, and internal respiration occurs in the mitochondria for the release of the energy.   RESPIRATION IS A OXIDATIVE PROCESS C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6 CO2 + 6H2O + 686 Kilocalorie heat. Here the glucose molecule is broken down with the help of oxygen to produce carbondioxide and water.  And since in this process the dry weight is decreased so this process is called oxidative process.   EXTERNAL RESPIRATION The external respiration is the...
